Have you realise that you favorite show such as , American' Next Top Model, Heroes, Survivor? ( well , I am a fan of ANTM ) are all from America! Yes, the always "big
Brother " US.
Constantly, their production are always hot topics of our daily chat or latest gossips. And as a-matter-of-fact, US is the current largest exporter of television programmes. They are the main supplier to those countries who are not able to produce films. So, what you think about think about this issue?
I think is terrible?! WHY? This is because have you not realise the on going of westernization through food joints , like MacDonald's, and Burger King? I am like having more and more friends who cannot really appreciate the art of holding a chopsticks. SO you think America have not invaded our lives ?
Now, with the help of new communication transmitter, they are more "into" our lives. Even their own people are thinking this way.
SO with more and more films showing kids that how their lives should be, and with parents finding it plain harmless, what will the future generation turn out to be?
Now you turn onto any English language based channels, you are bound to identify at least one that is America's production. So, how are we suppose to avoid it? Especially when we are now encourage to watch more English programmes to boost our English standard. I mean we are all human, we are only attracted to things that are interesting ( for majorities). If all the films are conveying message that are full of America's Culture, very soon, I believe there will o only be one "country" that will be called America.

ReplyDeletei agree that alot of american products have entered singapore, but i guess it is not all a bad thing, and if we were to promote english, it would be gd to watch shows from america, as they speak proper english, although singapore shows speak english, america's show naturally will showcase their own slang, but i do not think they will affect our lifestyles, i feel it is up to the government to promote our own sets of culture. well, singapore is such a small country with the lack of resources, it can't be helped that we must use some foreign
"intervention". imagine singapore company opening a fastfood restuarant on it's own, who will have the money, resources and recipes? and imagine singapore without a fastfood restuarant like KFC, without shows like ANTM (note: singapore next top model? i doubt we can even find alot of professional models in singapore, much said about TOP models.) so ya, i think it will be more mundane if we will to do without them right?

I think you're right in saying that much of Asian societies, especially the developed have very much been Americanized. Our media market is highly dominated by the influx of American media products, it's inevitable.

ReplyDeleteYa. It is pretty true. Especially for Singapore because it is such an integrated country( with lots of different races and religions). We are constantly affected by different cultures and religions.
Although I agree with you that We can really improve our English language, have you thought about how did our MT B Syllabus( like CLB TLB MLB) came about? That is sort of like what I am trying to get at . that is if everyone is so eager about our english standard and soon it may affect our culture and beliefs. Think about how the word Americanization came about.

It is not a new phenomenon that many things you see around you, have western influence. It is not limited to television shows only. Even our food, toiletries, fashion goods and ultimately our way of life, show these signs.
ReplyDeleteWhy is this happening? Is it because the Americans have an aura of coolness about them, no matter what they do? Is it because they have more good looking people who can easily create a following. Imagine if a Chinaman, a Singaporean ah beng and an American dude approached you in Orchard Road and started to give you a sales pitch. Who would you listen to the longest? I can safely say that it would be the American dude.
Perhaps, it is due to the fact that white people have long been considered conquerors and hence viewed to be more powerful than men of other races. Perhaps, there are reasons other than this. Seriously, I do not really know.
But I do feel that westernization has brought with it more evil than good. Do not flame me, because this is just my view. You can have your own.
For example, while I enjoy watching hollywood movies, I certainly do not condone some of the moral values that are portrayed in those movies.
